Principe Borghese tomato is an heirloom Italian variety with small cherry-type fruit, famed for over a century as the best type for sun-drying.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. An indeterminate, vigorous plant that can exceed two metres if not topped.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant outdoors or in greenhouse between April and May.
It adapts well to both open field and greenhouse with modest water needs; it requires sturdy staking and regular removal of side shoots.
The small, elongated fruits with a characteristic pointed tip weigh 30-50 grams and are harvested fully red in abundant clusters.
A rustic, resistant variety that still benefits from good canopy ventilation to prevent downy and powdery mildew.
Thanks to its dense, pasty, low-juice flesh, it is the classic variety for sun-drying and oil preserving, as well as for concentrated sauces.
Rich in lycopene, vitamin C and potassium, Principe Borghese tomato has antioxidant properties that become even more concentrated once dried.
