San Marzano Heinze tomato is a hybrid selection of the famous ecotype, developed to combine the traditional elongated shape with greater production uniformity and handling resistance.
It belongs to the species Solanum lycopersicum, family Solanaceae. A vigorous indeterminate plant, with regular growth and good yield.
Sow in a heated seedbed between February and March; transplant into the field from April-May, with vertical staking.
It needs balanced fertilising and regular watering; periodic removal of side shoots favours more even truss ripening.
The elongated fruit, about 80-100 g, keeps the classic cylindrical shape with firm skin, resistant to handling.
This hybrid selection shows good tolerance to the main disorders typical of San Marzano; monitor for downy mildew in humid seasons.
Ideal for sauces and preserves thanks to its compact flesh and steady yield, also valued for small-scale processing.
Rich in lycopene and vitamin C, San Marzano Heinze tomato has antioxidant properties and a sweet, mildly tangy taste.
